One of the most frequently asked questions by dermatologists’ patients is, “How long will it take to get rid of my acne with the treatment being administered?” Patients are also very interested in the effectiveness of the treatment and whether or not its effect is long term or short term. The effectiveness of cystic acne treatment is always dependent on the type of treatment given, the type of skin the patient has, and how severe the acne is. Sometimes it also depends upon what is causing the acne.
Mild Acne Problems
Mild acne problems usually only take a few days to clear up, depending on what is being used for treatment. If using a topical cream or a cleanser made specifically for skin troubled by acne, skin can clear up anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks.
Cortisone injections are another form of treatment that can be administered by a dermatologist. A cortisone shot speeds up the healing process and shrinks acne cysts. Cortisone shots work faster than the chemical called cortisone that is found naturally in the human body. The injection acts quickly because it heals both the inflammation and the surrounding skin. Patients will see results as quickly as within a few days.
Patients who suffer from cystic acne know that these cyst refuse to heal on their own they need a doctor’s intervention. Having minor surgery performed is an option chosen by many. The doctor makes a small incision in the cyst and allows the pus to drain out. Because the infected liquid is now removed, the area can now heal properly. An antibiotic is also administered to tackle any remaining bacteria. The site will heal completely after a few days, or a few weeks at the most.
Another alternative is using light therapy, which combines blue light therapy with photodynamic therapy. A drug is applied to the skin and allowed to set. After a short period of time, the skin is then exposed to blue light; this kills the bacteria. This procedure is repeated over the course of a few sessions and can take up to a few months
Eliminating the Source
One important question is what is causing the acne. Acne will not get better if the source is not eliminated. Sometimes the cause of acne can range from what is being ingested to the beauty products that are being used on the skin. If the cause is not identified and removed, any treatment will only be a temporary solution.
